Paul Sadler’s Swim Survival Program
7 November 2025
College Principal, Dr Michael Davies, shares his video newsletter with the community.
We are delighted to share that the Essendon Rotary Club has generously committed to supporting Zachary (Year 11) with a sponsorship to assist his attendance at the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) in 2026.
This prestigious program offers students a unique opportunity to engage with cutting-edge scientific research, meet inspiring professionals, and explore future pathways in STEM. Zachary’s selection for NYSF is a testament to his dedication and passion for science, and we are proud to see his efforts recognised.
To formally acknowledge this generous contribution, two representatives from the Essendon Rotary Club presented Zachary with a sponsorship certificate, marking the beginning of what promises to be an exciting and enriching experience.
We extend our sincere thanks to the Essendon Rotary Club for their ongoing commitment to youth development and community engagement.

We’re proud to raise the curtain on some incredible recognition - Newsies, our joint production with St Columba’s College, has been honoured by the 2025 Music Theatre Guild of Victoria, receiving multiple commendations and nominations that celebrate the outstanding talent and collaboration behind the show.

With sadness, we share the passing of Shelley Beecham
Shelley’s warmth, courage and kindness left a lasting imprint on our community. Her gentle spirit and generous heart touched many, and her legacy will continue to inspire.
She will be deeply missed.
We hold her loved ones in our prayers and surround them with care during this time.
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon her.
May she rest in peace. Amen.
We’re calling on our Inclusive Community to help bring joy to those doing it tough this Christmas. If you’re in a position to give, we invite you to donate Christmas presents or non-perishable food items to support the incredible work of the Footscray Vinnies Soup Van.
Donations can be placed under the Christmas trees at both our Essendon and Resurrection House Front Offices. These gifts will be collected on the last day of classes – Friday, 5 December.
More details are available on the MySBC Parent Portal.
A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful Ms La Torre for decorating the beautiful tree at our Essendon Campus, and to the amazing staff who brought the Resurrection House tree to life.
Let’s come together to make a difference this festive season.

Thank you to the special people in our Year 7 students' lives who were able to celebrate our Year 7 Special Persons’ Day.
Held on Friday, 24 October in the O’Brien Centre Gymnasium, the morning was filled with warmth and connection as we welcomed grandparents, guardians, and other significant guests for a celebration of community and belonging.
Deputy Principal, Ms Therese Wilson, opened the event with a heartfelt welcome, followed by a beautifully coordinated morning tea thanks to our Welcoming Community Group. Student leaders served tea and coffee with care and enthusiasm, embodying the spirit of hospitality.
Guests also enjoyed guided tours of the College, offering a glimpse into the learning spaces and daily life of our Year 7 students.
A sincere thank you to all staff who worked behind the scenes to make the day such a success.
Last week we celebrated Avila House Week in the spirit of our House Matron, St Teresa of Ávila — a woman of courage, prayer, and deep compassion.
The week was filled with energy and connection:
Moments like these remind us of St Teresa’s enduring vision — to support one another in community, nurture a life of prayerfulness, and put our faith into action.
A heartfelt well done to all involved, and a special thank you to Avila House Captain, Marcus, for his leadership and enthusiasm throughout the week.
The Essendon Football Club Academy (EFCA) concluded its outstanding inaugural year with a celebratory graduation evening at the Hangar on Monday, 8 September. The event was a fitting finale for the 2025 cohort, where Essendon CEO Craig Vozzo delivered an inspiring address to the graduates, acknowledging their commitment and growth throughout the program.
This year, 23 Year 12 students and 16 Year 11 students successfully completed the EFCA course, which offered a rare opportunity to immerse themselves in the elite football environment while gaining a comprehensive understanding of how the Essendon Football Club operates across its departments. The curriculum, uniquely designed for St Bernard’s College, encouraged students to explore a wide range of career pathways through topics such as coaching, management, mental wellbeing, and the business of football.
Throughout the year, students participated in enriching experiences, including match day involvement at the MCG, training sessions at the Hangar, and practical recovery workshops at Foundry Athletic. They also engaged with club staff and guest speakers, received insights into post-Year 12 pathways through the Essendon Education Academy, and contributed to school and community football events through coaching and officiating roles.
The EFCA program has empowered students to extend their learning beyond the classroom, offering real-world exposure and professional development through its partnership with the Essendon Football Club. The graduation evening not only celebrated their achievements but also marked the beginning of exciting new journeys for each participant.
Swim and Survival Program at Paul Sadler Swimland Essendon
Message from Paul Sadler:
When we read the latest National Drowning Report, we were really moved. Behind every number is a person, a family, and a preventable tragedy. What stood out to us was how many of those affected are adults and teens — groups that often don’t see themselves as being “at risk.”
With summer just around the corner, we’ve created a 5-Week Water Safety Intensive Course to help adults and teens build confidence in and around the water, and learn skills that could one day save a life.
As The Survival Specialists, our focus is on practical, real-world water safety. Over the five weeks, participants will cover:
● Confidence and awareness in the water
● Safe entries and exits in different conditions
● Floating, treading water, and breath control
● Survival backstroke and deep-water mobility
● Rescue techniques and survival scenarios
We’d love to offer this opportunity to any of your staff or senior school students who might want to feel more confident and capable in the water, all within a supportive and encouraging environment.
