On Tuesday 16 June, a team of 15 St Bernard’s students proudly represented the College at the Science and Engineering Challenge held at Deakin University.

The Science and Engineering Challenge is a nationwide STEM outreach program founded by the University of Newcastle and delivered in partnership with Rotary Clubs and Deakin University. The program provides students with an exciting opportunity to apply their knowledge of science, engineering, and technology in a competitive and highly engaging setting.

Throughout the day, our Year 9 and 10 students competed against teams from other schools in a series of hands-on challenges designed to test their problem-solving, teamwork, and creativity. Activities included:

  • designing and constructing an earthquake-resistant tower
  • building a structurally sound bridge
  • developing solutions to supply electricity to a model city

Students demonstrated excellent collaboration and resilience as they worked through complex engineering tasks under time constraints. The event not only fostered critical thinking and innovation but also provided valuable insight into real-world applications of STEM concepts.

We commend our students for their enthusiasm, teamwork, and commitment throughout the day, and we thank Deakin University and the Rotary Club for hosting such an engaging and worthwhile experience.
